Breeches - riding apparel

Breeches are a special type of pants worn by equestrians in all riding styles. Riding breeches fit snugly to the rider's body and have a seat (grip), which improves the rider's adhesion to the saddle. Moreover, riding pants lack internal seams, which prevents chafing. Breeches are typically worn with tall riding boots or paddock boots with half chaps.

The Equishop equestrian store offers riding breeches with a silicone grip, knee patch or full seat breeches, and riding tights from brands such as Samshield, Kingsland, Pikeur, Animo, Equiline, and many more.

Breeches vs Tights

Though breeches are traditional riding pants, some riders may opt for a stretchy alternative. Riding tights have no zip closure, but they do have a knee patch or full seat. You can choose between pull on riding breeches (or tights) and breeches that feature belt loops.

Knee patch breeches vs Full seat breeches

When looking for the right pair of riding trousers, you need to decide on the seat. Knee patch breeches is located on the knees and offers greater flexibility and breathability of breeches. Breeches with a full silicone grip guarantee the best adhesion to the saddle. A grip in breeches can be made of silicone or leather.

Fabrics for breeches

Traditionally, equestrian breeches were created from wool and cotton fabrics. Nowadays, different fabrics are used to offer water absorption and stain resistance. While you are riding, they wick moisture away and ensure breathability and freedom of movement.

Different types of breeches

Breeches can vary depending upon riding styles or based on the location of the grip fabric on the pants - full seat and knee patch breeches. You can also choose from high rise and low rise breeches, wide and narrow waistbands, and thickness: thermo breeches will keep you warm during winter, while lightweight breeches with cooling technology are a better option for summer riding.

There are different styles of riding breeches. Some have logo details on the leg, some feature color block panels or a side zip. There are breeches with pockets, mid, high or traditional rises, and bootcut bottoms - all that to suit every rider's taste.

Although you can choose any pair of breeches for a casual riding training, dressage riders are most likely to wear breeches in white color. White breeches are also required for riding competitions.
