When should you bathe your horse? How should you go about it?
It's best to bathe your horse on warm days, when the outside temperature is at least 15-20°C. Too low a temperature can lead to a cold, so it's best to avoid bathing in colder conditions. Spring and summer are the ideal times for bathing. Before bringing your horse to the wash station, make sure the available space is safe. The place where the horse is tied should be clear of any objects that could get caught between the legs.

Before bathing, clean your horse and prepare all the necessary accessories: a bucket , a sponge , horse shampoo , a garden hose with lukewarm water, and a squeegee or towels for drying the horse after the bath. Additionally, you can bring a special wash mitt (rubber or soft) , and for horses that get bored easily, it's worth having a licking trough . A massage is a great way to enhance your bath – a massage currycomb is useful for this.
How to bathe a horse?
It's important that the water is the right temperature – too cold or too warm can be uncomfortable for the horse and cause stress. Before spraying the horse with water, adjust the pressure of the water jet to a more diffused setting – too strong a stream can cause discomfort. Always start spraying the horse from the legs and gradually move the water jet upwards to avoid shock .

Once the horse is completely wet, we can begin by lathering it with a bucket of shampoo and water. Using a sponge or wash mitt, spread the shampoo over the horse's body in circular motions, starting at the neck and working downward. Note: Avoid the horse's eyes and muzzle when applying coat cleansers! Special wipes are designed for washing the head and nose areas. When washing the chest of geldings or the vulva area of mares, remember to use special washes and rinse thoroughly after cleaning.

After thoroughly applying the shampoo, it's time to rinse it off – again, start by dousing the legs and gradually work your way up. All cleaning products must be thoroughly rinsed off . Once you're sure there's no shampoo residue on the coat, you can begin drying it. This is important if you want to further cool your horse. Contrary to popular belief, leaving water dripping on the body doesn't help in hot weather – excess water heats up quickly. For this reason, it's always a good idea to wipe off the water with a squeegee or wipe the horse with a bath towel. That's it! Now, simply expose the horse to the warm sun and let it dry on its own.

Additionally, after washing your horse, it's always a good idea to use coat and tail care products . These are special products that not only moisturize and nourish the hair but also make combing easier.

5 Myths About Horse Shampoo
- Every shampoo is the same : This is not true – horse shampoos vary in composition and properties! Depending on their formula, shampoos can have different effects – softening, smoothing, soothing, etc. Furthermore, based on their ingredients, we can distinguish between gentle shampoos for regular use and stronger shampoos for occasional use. It's worth choosing products tailored to the needs of your horse.
- Human shampoo is just as good for horses : Absolutely ! Human shampoos have a different pH – for humans, it's 4.7-5.6, while for horses, the base pH is 7-8 (with heavy sweating, it can reach up to 8!). Because a horse's pH is more alkaline than a human's, only use products designed for this purpose when bathing your horse.
- Shampoo doesn't affect a horse's skin health : A properly selected shampoo can help combat skin problems such as dandruff or ringworm. Additionally, using shampoos designed for horses restores the proper pH, which translates into better skin and coat condition. However, it's important to remember that a fundamental factor in a horse's health and condition is a proper diet, including appropriately selected feed and vitamins .
- Bathing your horse removes all parasites : Bathing can help get rid of some parasites, but it's not a substitute for regular deworming and the use of antiparasitic products . Certain species of parasites can only be effectively controlled with products specifically designed for this purpose. You can find more about repellents for horses here !
- Shampoo damages the horse's coat : When using horse shampoos, we can say that bathing with a product tailored to the horse's needs does not harm it ; on the contrary, it can improve the condition of the coat. However, caution should be exercised when usingdry horse shampoos frequently, as these types of products do not require rinsing. Excessive use can lead to product buildup on the coat, negatively impacting the condition of the coat and skin.
