Why the fastening method determines the effectiveness of a protector?
Even the most technologically advanced protector, if it loosens during work, shifts a few centimeters, or detaches at a gallop, is less safe than a protector with a simpler design but securely fastened. Tendon protection works only when the protector is exactly where it was designed to be.
In the premium market, two fastening systems dominate: velcro and elastic strap with a stud attachment. Each has its place in equestrianism. This article clarifies the choice and shows when each system makes sense, using two flagship lines from Zandona available at Equishop – Action (velcro) and Carbon Pro (stud).
Velcro protectors – how they work and who they suit?
The velcro system is a standard used by most training and sport protectors available in the mid-to-high segment. In premium protectors, velcro is made of a technical, dense material attached to a wide elastic strap. Each protector has two to four fastening points – the more there are, the more secure the hold.

Advantages: quick donning and doffing (you put on the protector, fasten it, and go in a few seconds – critical when working in the stable with several horses a day), full adjustability (you can fasten it looser or tighter depending on the horse's hair thickness, season, individual leg build), wide strap distributes pressure (standard velcro in premium protectors is 5–6 cm wide – this surface distributes pressure evenly along the entire length of the protector, avoiding pressure points), easy replacement if worn out (in many premium models, the velcro strap is replaceable – service costs a fraction of the price of a new protector).
Disadvantages: velcro wear over time (dust, dirt, hair, and sand getting into the micro-hooks reduce fastening strength) and the possibility of accidental unfastening (if the velcro is dirty or improperly fastened, the protector may loosen during work).
Stud protectors – the mechanics of the solution
The "stud" system (elastic strap with a metal stud-type fastener) is a design that historically originated from the Italian and French show jumping schools. Instead of velcro, the protector has an elastic strap ending in a metal stud, which is fastened into fixed holes (like a belt buckle) or a fixed catch.
The mechanics are simple and flawless. The elastic strap tightens when fastened, and the stud goes into its designated place. The design cannot unfasten due to hair, dust, or dirt – the only way to unfasten it is mechanical, by consciously pulling the stud out of its socket.
Advantages: maximum fastening durability (metal does not wear out from contact with hair), no accidental unfastening (even extreme loads do not cause spontaneous unfastening), constant fastening strength (the elastic strap is factory calibrated), thinner straps = more concentrated pressure (this is an intentional design element – a narrow strap gives the horse clearer information about leg work during a jump).
Disadvantages: longer to put on (requires precision – the stud must hit the socket), less adjustability (fixed sockets offer only a few positions), higher price (metal components and precise finishing increase production cost).
Five key differences between velcro and stud fastenings
Speed of fastening: velcro is very quick, studs require precision. Fastening durability: velcro gradually decreases, studs are constant for years. Width adjustment: velcro offers full stepless adjustment, studs offer step adjustment (sockets). Risk of unfastening: with velcro, it increases with dirt, with studs it is practically zero. Price: velcro is standard, studs are higher.
This is a simplified summary, but sufficient for making a decision. If the priority is speed of daily work – velcro. If the priority is absolute certainty of fastening in extreme situations – studs.
Julia Jaglarz on velcro and studs – when each system makes sense
Julia Jaglarz, who regularly works with horses using both fastening types, explains the role of both systems most comprehensively:
“When to use velcro protectors, and when to use stud protectors? Velcro protectors are an excellent choice for training – evenly fastened velcro distributes pressure over a larger area, and the durable shell provides protection during training. Stud protectors have thinner straps, so the pressure is more concentrated, making the horse more sensitive to leg cues during jumps."
This statement clarifies what cannot be found in any product description. Velcro is designed for pressure distribution – the wide strap ensures that the horse works comfortably for long minutes of training, and the protector does not irritate a specific point on the leg. Studs do the opposite – the narrower strap provides concentrated pressure that the horse feels more clearly, thus better controlling leg position during a jump.
It's not a question of "better/worse". These are two different tools for two different tasks in horse work.

Safety – which system fails less often
In conversations with our ambassadors and riders at Equishop, one thing stands out: we have never encountered spontaneous unfastening with stud protectors. With velcro protectors, it did happen, albeit rarely – usually after a season of intensive use without velcro maintenance.
This does not mean that velcro is dangerous. It means that it requires maintenance discipline. Cleaning once a week with a brush, checking the fastening strength before each training session, replacing the strap once a season if necessary.
Stud protectors do not require this level of discipline. You check once a month whether the metal has corroded (in practice, with Zandona stainless steel, this does not happen), and whether the elastic strap has tears. Once a year, you inspect the whole thing – most stud models last for many seasons without service.
From the perspective of the FEI Code of Conduct for the Welfare of the Horse, any solution that consistently keeps protection in place serves the horse's well-being. The choice of fastening system is not a matter of aesthetics – it is a matter of responsibility to ensure that the protection truly works.
What riders choose in show jumping, dressage, and eventing
Show jumping – a mix of both systems. Daily work and lower courses – velcro (speed of fastening in the stable, pressure distribution, horse comfort). Professional competitions and higher-category courses – studs (certainty of fastening under intense load, concentrated pressure making the horse more sensitive to leg work). Many riders have both sets in the stable.
Dressage – velcro dominates. The low dynamics of work do not require absolute certainty of fastening, and the speed of fastening facilitates daily training. Superior Air and Carbon Air models are standard here.
Eventing and cross-country – only studs or velcro with additional securing. Cross-country is a discipline of extreme loads, where the protector must withstand water, mud, branches, and contact with fixed obstacles. Recreation and trail riding – velcro. Simplicity and speed are key here. Rigid stud fastening would be overkill.

Carbon Pro is a model used by top-level show jumpers. The design combines maximum tendon protection with a stud fastening system – this is a conscious design choice because in competitions, the certainty that the protector will not unfasten during a single jump is an absolute priority.

What distinguishes Carbon Pro stud protectors: full carbon fiber shell – stiff, lightweight, resistant to impacts from obstacle poles; EVC (Evoluted Viscoelastic Cells) cushioning layer – viscoelastic foam absorbing the energy of point impacts; stud-type fastening system – metal fastener in an elastic strap, factory calibrated. How to recognize good velcro and a good stud fastening?
Regardless of the system, the quality of workmanship can be assessed independently before purchase or upon first contact with the protector.
Good velcro: wide (minimum 5–6 cm) – larger contact surface, even pressure distribution; with dense, technical micro-hooks – not cheap, blurred tape; reinforced stitching at the edges – does not fall off after a year of use; with additional non-slip reinforcement on the elastic strap underneath.
Good stud: stainless metal – will not rust from moisture or horse sweat; fits precisely into the socket – does not loosen during work; with an elastic strap with constant, calibrated tension – does not stretch after a season; with factory sealing at the socket – no sharp edges that could injure the horse's leg.

Care – each system requires something different
Velcro requires regular cleaning. Hair, sand, and dust get into the micro-hooks and reduce holding strength. A velcro brush (stiffer bristles) or a plastic nail brush once a week is sufficient to remove residue. Once a season, it's worth checking the condition of the elastic strap under the velcro – if it stretches, it's time for a replacement.
Studs require significantly less. You check once a month whether the metal has corrosion (in practice, with Zandona stainless steel, this doesn't happen), and whether the elastic strap has tears. Once a year, you inspect the whole thing – most stud models serve for many seasons without service.
A common rule for both systems: do not machine wash Zandona protectors. Vibrations damage the internal cushioning structure and deform the TPU insert. Hand washing with cool water and mild soap is standard.
