The equestrian events take place at the Château de Versailles . Originally built as a simple hunting lodge, the Château de Versailles became the court of Louis XIV in 1682 and the epicenter of French royalty. In 1883, it and its magnificent gardens became a national museum open to the public and was the first French site to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

A temporary outdoor arena, surrounded by several stands with a capacity of 22,000 spectators, will be set up on the esplanade of the Etoile Royale in the heart of the palace gardens. This arena will host two eventing disciplines (dressage and show jumping) as well as show jumping and dressage competitions (Olympic and Paralympic). The individual and team eventing cross-country trials will be held along the Grand Canal.

How many days do the Games last?

The modern Olympic Games last approximately two and a half weeks. This year's Games in Paris will last exactly 17 days, including the opening and closing ceremonies.

Is horseback riding an Olympic sport? Is equestrianism in the Olympics?

It's obvious to all equestrians that equestrianism has been an Olympic sport for 124 years! It first appeared at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris. However, the three Olympic equestrian disciplines we know today only appeared at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm:

  • dressage
  • show jumping
  • Eventing

Polish team lineup in Versailles for the 2024 Olympic Games [UPDATE AND RESULTS]:

  • Aleksandra Szulc and Breakdance [the pair finishes their performance on July 31st with a score of 60.078%]

Sandra Sysojeva and her 8-year-old mare, Maxima Bella, have qualified for the individual finals of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. On August 4th, we'll have the opportunity to cheer on this pair during the Freestyle Grand Prix. We wish them luck!

  • Update: Sandra Sysojeva and mare Maxima Bella scored 80.075% during the final run of the Grand Prix Freestyle competition (a new personal record for this pair).

The result secured the pair 15th place in the standings. It's worth noting that this is a historic Olympic result for our country. Big applause!

  • Milczarek Katarzyna and Guapo [the pair finishes their performance on July 30 with a score of 66.910%]

Katarzyna Milczarek gave an interview after her ride, sharing that the competition arena clearly made an impression on her horse, Guapo, as evidenced by his demeanor. This resulted in the horse stiffening and making two major errors that lowered his score. [source: PZJ]

* Skowrońska-Kozubik Żaneta and her gelding Love Me were initially selected, but unfortunately, the horse was not approved for racing after today's (July 30) re-inspection. Szulc Aleksandra and her horse Breakdance were selected from the reserve list. It's worth noting that Breakdance is a Polish-bred horse bred by Krzysztof Lik.

Wide reserve squad:

  • Krohn Susanne and Titolas
  • Safronova Olga and Sandro d'Amour

Show jumping:

First squad:

  • Grzegorzewski Adam and Issem finished their run with a score of 28 penalty points.

  • Wechta Maksymilian and Chepettano finished the course with a score of 9 points.

*Michał Tyszko and Colinero were in the starting lineup, but due to an unfortunate incident, an accident occurred during a veterinary inspection at the entrance to the stables in Versailles. A groom from one of the Belgian team riders lost control of his horse, which attacked Michał Tyszko's Colinero. As a result of this incident, Colinero suffered an injury that is currently being assessed by veterinarians. Unfortunately, it is already certain that due to the short time before the veterinary inspection, he will not be able to compete in this year's Olympic Games. Dawid Kubiak and Flash Blue B took Michał Tyszko's place in the starting lineup. Cassandra Orschell and Dacara E. were called up as reserve riders. [source: PZJ]

Update: Dawid Kubiak on Flash Blue B, Adam Grzegorzewski on Issem, and Maksymilian Wechta on Chepettano qualified for the individual show jumping finals. Paris 2024 Qualification Rules for Jumping, Dressage and Eventing

It's worth noting that equestrian is the only Olympic discipline where men and women compete in the same classification. This has been the case since the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Previously, at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, women were only allowed to compete in dressage.

The qualifying regulations specify the minimum age of the competitor and horse:

  • Dressage : the minimum age of the rider is 16 years in the year of the Games (born before December 31, 2008) , and the minimum age of the horse is 8 years (born before December 31, 2016)
  • show jumping: the rider's age is 18 years in the year of the Games' start (born before December 31, 2006) , and the minimum age of the horse is 9 years (born before December 31, 2015)
  • Eventing : the rider's age is 18 years in the year of the Games' start (born before December 31, 2008) and the minimum age of the horse is 8 years (born before December 31, 2016)

One team of showjumpers, dressage riders , and eventers representing France, the host country , will automatically be eligible to compete . Other competitors must meet the eligibility criteria in accordance with the rules and deadlines set out on the FEI website for each discipline:

The Olympic Games in Paris are open to a maximum of:

  • 60 dressage competitors (including 15 teams)
  • 75 show jumpers (including 20 teams)
  • 65 eventing riders ( including 16 teams)

Each country that has qualified in a given discipline may submit:

  • dressage and show jumping : max. 1 competitor in individual competitions and a 3-person team in team competitions
  • Eventing : max. 2 competitors in individual competitions and a 3-person team in team competitions

The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of a given country will decide who will ultimately represent the country in each discipline and category (team and individual) . The only exception is the Bipartite Commission Invitation, which is directed to a specific athlete.

Qualification Rules: Paralympic Dressage 2024

When it comes to Para Dressage, the limit of competitors who can take part in the Paralympic games is 78 riders in 11 competitions:

  • Individual competitions: are held in groups/levels depending on the degree of disability in the following competitions:
    • Pair Grand Prix (Group I to V)
    • Para Grand Prix Freestyle (groups I to V)
  • Team competition: open category

Level/group I is where athletes with the greatest degree of disability compete, and level V is where those with the least disability compete.

Each country can be represented by:

  • 4 players in individual competitions
  • 1 team in team competitions (max. 3 riders who also obtained an individual classification, and at least 1 of them must have a disability level I, II or III)

To qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in the para dressage discipline, you must:

  • achieve at least one score of 64% in an FEI Para Equestrian 3* or higher competition in an individual or team competition between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2022.

or

  • achieve at least one score of at least 64% in a competition classified as FEI Para Equestrian 3* or higher in Grand Prix Test A or Grand Prix Test B between 1 January 2023 and 19 June 2024.

Despite the athlete's qualifications , the final decision on who will go to the Paralympics is made by the National Paralympic Committee (with the exception mentioned above: Bipartite Commission Invitation).

You can read more about the Paralympic dressage qualifications HERE .

Who will go to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games – get to know the names of Polish riders

The last time Poland fielded teams in all three equestrian disciplines: dressage, jumping, and eventing was at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980. We returned with two medals.

After 44 years, we once again have a full quota of athletes qualifying for the Olympic Games in all three disciplines. Riders had until June 24, 2024, to qualify for the Olympics (and until June 19, 2024, in para-dressage).

Importantly , despite the qualifications of the competitors , the final selection of the riders who will go to the 2024 Olympic Games depends on the decision of the National Olympic Committee (the only exception is the Bipartite Commission Invitation , which is addressed to a specific competitor).

We are curious about the final composition of our national teams in the individual and team competitions – the final application is submitted by the National Olympic Committee by July 8, 2024!

Ski jumping at the 2024 Olympics - Polish team

Fun fact : 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of Captain Adam Królikiewicz winning the bronze medal in show jumping with his horse Picador at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. Let's hope that this time, the Poles will return with a medal!

In ski jumping, the team qualification for Poland for the 2024 Olympic Games was won by:

  • Adam Grzegorzewski and Issem
  • Maksymilian Wechta and Chepettano
  • Wojciech Wojcianiec and Chintablue
  • Przemysław Konopacki and Home Run

They qualified for the Games during the CSIO competition in Prague, July 27-30, 2023. More information can be found on the Polish Equestrian Federation website .

Other Polish riders should also appear during the next competitions , which will provide the possibility of qualifying for the Games, including:

  • Marek Lewicki
  • Michał Ziębicki

In Poland, such a competition will be held on June 13-16 - CSIO4* Sopot.

The calendar of ski jumping qualification competitions for the Olympic Games can be found HERE.

Since May 2021, our ski jumping team has been coached by former Belgian competitor Jan Vinckier , who has lived in Poland for 10 years. Let's hope he can lead our jumpers to victory!

Dressage at the 2024 Olympic Games - Polish team

In dressage, Poland secured team qualification for the 2024 Olympic Games at the CDIO3*-NC in Pilisjaszfalu near Budapest, June 7-11, 2023. In the absence of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine, the Israeli, Polish, and Hungarian teams competed. Our team lost Aleksandra Szulc in April, sidelining her until October, and two weeks before the start in Hungary, Beata Stremler also lost her mount, Fairplay, to an injury. In this situation, the Hungarians seemed to be the favorites, and we were represented by:

  • Żaneta Skowrońska-Kozubik and Romantic P (find out more about our Polish competitor by clicking here !)
  • Magdalena Jura and Ron
  • Marta Sobierajska and Ultrablue De Massa
  • Mateusz Cichoń and Herzregent 2

The Israeli team quickly closed the gap on the leading pair, but the battle between Poland and Hungary continued until the final run. Each team competed with four pairs, and the top three scores determined the winner. Before the final round, we were 2.3% behind the Hungarians, and Jazmin Yom Tov, representing our rivals, increased the gap by another 0.2%. Żaneta Skowrońska-Kozubik was the last to start, with a spectacular run that received a score of 69.696%. We outperformed the Hungarians by 1.5%, and Poland's qualification for the Paris Games became a fact.

The national dressage team currently has seven riders with horses and an appetite for the Games: Magdalena Jura, Filip Kowalski, Olga Safronova, Żaneta Skowrońska-Kozubik, Marta Sobierajska, Aleksandra Szulc, and Beata Stremler. However, the list is open, and Katarzyna Milczarek, returning after a year and a half break, and the current Polish Vice-Champions Aleksandra Popławska and Karolina Mazurek will certainly be vying for spots on the team. A strong point for our team at the Games should be Beata Stremler on Fürstin Bea , who won the prestigious Luisdor-Preis in Frankfurt last December.

The race for spots on the Olympic team began on February 18th at the CDI3* Kaleń-Towarzystwo, where the best Poles were Aleksandra Szulc (67.1%), Katarzyna Milczarek (65.8%), Susanne Krohn (65.0%), and Karolina Mazurek (64.6%). This coming weekend, March 1-3, the Polish Indoor Championships will be held in Radzionków, and less than a week later in Motesice, Slovakia, Filip Kowalski, Aleksandra Popławska, and Żaneta Skowrońska-Kozubik, among others, will compete for the MER in the CDI-W competitions.

The CDI3* Wrocław-Partynice, scheduled for March 22-24, promises to be very interesting. Although pairs have until June to obtain their MER, the Polish Equestrian Federation (PZJ) is obligated to submit a comprehensive list of competitors to the FEI on March 28, from which the team for the Games will be selected. Our dressage athletes face a busy and challenging period.

The coach and selector of the national team is Andrzej Sałacki – twelve-time medalist of the Polish Dressage Championships and two-time medalist of the World Vaulting Championships, member of the IDTC board and the EEF working group responsible for dressage.

The calendar of dressage competitions qualifying for the Olympic Games can be found HERE. In Poland, such competitions will also be held:

  • June 22-24 CDI3* Partynice, Wroclaw
  • April 19-21 CDI3* Guest that
  • May 3-5 CDI3* Radzionk ów
  • June 20-23 CDI3* Sopot

Paralympic Dressage 2024

So far, the individual qualification for the Paralympic Games in Paris for Poland was won by Monika Bartyś with the horse Caspar (multiple gold medalist of the Polish Championships, participant of the World Championships Herning 2022).

The deadline for obtaining qualifications is June 19, 2024 – we hope that by then other Polish athletes will also have achieved the required minimum, qualifying for the 2024 Paralympic Games.

During the Paralympics, the athlete will be led by the national team coach, Jarosław Poręba , who has held this position since 2022.

Poles at the Olympic Games in equestrian sports

Polish Olympic medalists in equestrian sports

Poles don't often attend the Olympic Games – this is undoubtedly due to fewer resources than other Western European countries – fewer sponsors , and therefore fewer horses with which to gain experience and FEI ranking points. World War II didn't help the development of equestrianism in Poland either. Fortunately, the years pass, and our national team is getting stronger!

So far, the most successful Olympic Games were the 1980 in Moscow, from where the Poles returned with a silver medal in the team competition (jumping) and gold for Jan Kowalczyk and the horse Artemor (jumping).

Polish representatives at the Olympic Games in equestrian sports - a summary of the last 20 years

  • in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

in eventing:

  • Jan Kamiński (who was originally supposed to be a reserve, but replaced Paweł Spisak when his horse failed the veterinary inspection) was awarded 29th place
  • Joanna Pawlak (45 months) and Małgorzata Cybulska (49 months) were not classified
  • Poland took 13th place in the team competition
  • in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics

in eventing: Paweł Spisak

  • in 2012 London Olympics:

in dressage:

  • Beata Stremler
  • Katarzyna Milczarek-Jasińska
  • Michał Rapcewicz

in eventing: Paweł Spisak

  • in the 2008 Beijing Olympics

in dressage:

  • Michał Rapcewicz

in eventing : Paweł Spisak and Artur Społowicz

  • in the 2004 Athens Olympics

in eventing: Andrzej Pasek, Kamil Rajnert, Paweł Spisak

in Skoki: Grzegorz Kubiak

  • in 2000 Olympic Games Sydney - none

We can't wait to cheer on our dressage, showjumping, and eventing teams at the Paris Games! We hope they have successful starts and perhaps even return with medals.
